RUPERT EDMUND GILES
Rupert Giles | 47 | Heterosexual | Good | Watcher to Buffy| Anthony Stewart Head
you're not ready for the world outside
YOU KEEP PRETENDING BUT YOU JUST CAN'T HIDE
the dark magics and demonology have been part of giles' life since he was a baby. his father was a watcher, his mother worked for the council. it only makes sense that he was inundated with the knowledge from the time he was old enough to talk. he studied on his own, finding that mystical artifacts were interesting. he has forty years of knowledge on the topic.
[/li][li]genius level intellect
it was apparent at a young age that rupert giles was smart. he was more than smart though, he was a genius. he could figure out problems days before anyone else and his ability to retain information aided in this. it was clear that when he was grown he would be one of the greatest assets to the watchers council. he understand physics, chemistry and various other subjects on a level unlike many others.
[/li][li]knowledge of several languages
he was taught latin, german, sumerian, and ancient greek. each of which he is fluent in. it's this part of him that shows of his intelligence. there are a few languages that he isn't so good at such as celtic but if you give him a decent amount of time he can translate anything. he's fluent in several demonic languages aside from the human ones as well.
[/li][li]special knowledge of history, philosophy, science and human knowledge
his favorite subjects in school, were history and science. these courses allowed him to understand the variations between the mortal realm and that of the demon world. his tutors and even through college never could quite understand why he was so fascinated with all of the subjects he was. his knowledge of psychology allows him to communicate and understand the slayer
[/li][li]experienced in hand-to-hand combat
at the age of twelve his father started training him in martial arts and hand to hand combat. it took him three years to be even considered proficient but now he is experienced. give him the chance to punch someone and you will find him more effective than using a melee weapon.
[/li][li]proficient with melee weapons
swords, axes and any other types of melee weapons giles can use. he prefers the crossbow because he doesn't have to be so close to the creatures to use it. he can stay at a relative safe distance and that is important. however, should the need arise giles can keep his own in a swordf ight.
[/li][li]talented singer and guitarist
music was a talent he got from his mother but he has kept it mostly secret. during his bad boy days he was in a rock band and their lead guitarist. he wants to be able to sing and play but so much of his free time is taken up by training his slayer and fighting the forces of darkness.
WEAKNESSES [/li][li]his slayer
Buffy is almost like a daughter to him. she's the only reason he is sticking to the council. she's the only thing that can be used against him to get him to bend to someone's will. giles would die to keep buffy safe and would do anything within his power to make sure she never died again.
[/li][li]stamina
he's only human after all. while he is in pretty good shape he doesn't possess the same stamina a vampire or a slayer would. he can keep up with them to a certain point but after a while fatigue will wear on him more than anyone else. he knows that it's a weakness, something that might eventually cause him to die.
[/li][li]love
his love for family and friends will be his undoing ultimately. everyone that has touched his life, in a positive way he feels some sort of love for and it has shaped who he is. while he knows the dangers of allowing that emotion, giles doesn't care. he wants someone to love him back and knows that he very well could fall to love.
[/li][li]danger
while he dislikes danger he knows its part of the life. how much isn't part of his choosing. being a watcher he knows that he can be used as a tool to get to the slayers and they may very well fall for it. he hates that fact but knows there is nothing at all he can do.
[/li][li]allowing his emotions to control him
he does sometimes act on his emotions. his love for buffy has caused him quite a bit of heartache. he thinks of her as a daughter and that has forced the council to threaten him on more than one occasion. even though she was just recently called. something about her calls to him.
[/li][li]not letting the darkness get out
he has a dark part inside of him. the side that goes by the nickname ripper. he has worked hard to tame that side. he's giles for now but there have been a few occasions when ripper has made himself know.
[/li][li]earl gray tea
of all the teas, earl gray is the one that giles loves the most. he finds it to be the one that anyone can bribe him with. true its only a beverage but the soothing of the orange tea is not something he is going to argue against.

[/li][/ul]
your path's unbeaten, and it's all uphill
AND YOU CAN MEET IT BUT YOU NEVER WILL
he's british after all. tea is something he grew up drinking and he likes it. its not as harsh as coffee, not such a shock to the system. its soothing to him and the only thing that can keep him calm in a stressful situation. when he wants to be tense he will drink coffee.
[/li][li]singing and playing the guitar
again music is important to him. giles finds it relaxing. its the only way he can express himself and not be judged. he knows that the council frowns upon it, and perhaps that is why he enjoys it.
[/li][li]his slayer
the slayers are confounding his life. she is an accomplishment, even now. he knows that she is the best slayer they have ever had. he only hopes he can keep her safe, make sure that she lives to see her eighteenth birthday. but the question becomes, which one.
[/li][li]being a source of strength for someone
he knows that his slayer can use him a source of strength through tough times. her and her friends as well. its a wonderful feeling for him because he always felt like the black sheep in his family. he likes being a stalwart.
[/li][li]magic
there is something so amazing about tapping into the elements of the world. being able to create fire or even a protection spell fascinates him. most of his experience is with the darker, heavier magics. he's into the dark magics, the black magics that can destroy the world.
[/li][li]reading any book he can get his hands on
giles has always had a voracious need to read. he loves to learn and absorb knowledge whether from demonic books or human books. he will read anything and everything you give him. he loves libraries the most as it is a place to house his collection of books.
[/li][li]rugby
the physical contact of the sport amuses him. he played rugby in college to pass the time and get a free credit. he likes watching them kick the ball and get into fights. for him its the right amount of contact in the sport. its bloody.
DISLIKES [/li][li]vampires
its not that he doesn't think there is any chance they could be good. its the simple fact that they have no remorse for killing, they will slaughter anything that crosses their path whether they be ally or foe.
[/li][li]complicated situations
life is complicated and he hates that. how do you justify to someone that they shouldn't care for someone at all because of their duty. the simple fact that the word duty makes things complicated makes giles hate it.
[/li][li]rigidity of the council
giles knows that faith and the newest slayer buffy are not exactly the text book cases. he can't apply the same rigid standards to either of them that he could to someone born into the role. unlike most potentials buffy wasn't taken away from her family and raised by her watcher from birth. he hates that they expect him to be strict and disciplined when they don't bother to get to know the slayer.
[/li][li]bowing to others will
for years he has done what the watcher's council wanted him to but he hates it. the guys that run the council are nothing but washed up wannabe watchers. he knows that if they were ever out in the field they wouldn't survive. he hates that they think they are superior simply because they were born into the higher ranks.
[/li][li]dishonesty
liars tend to face a wrath that giles only reserves for those he hates the most. the ripper part of his personality tends to come out. for the most part he's a laid back kind of guy and doesn't mind if you do something wrong. just tell him about it. often times giles can offer a perspective or solution to the situation without judgement. he knows a lot more than people give him credit for.
[/li][li]death
death is a natural part of living, but that doesn't mean that giles has to like it. its how people die that bother him the most. if it had been when they were old and of natural causes there would be no room for him to be angry. its the deaths by supernatural means that make him angry, make him feel like a failure as a watcher. how is he supposed to stop people from dying if he's just one person.
[/li][li]lonlieness
giles has dedicated his life to serving the council, mostly. even in his rebellious phase he was alone. he misses jenny calendar, the only woman he ever fell in love with. its that loneliness that drives him to darker parts of his world. he understands that like the slayer, the watcher should not allow themselves to get too close to people.

i wish i could say the right words to lead you through this land,
WISH I COULD PLAY THE FATHER AND TAKE YOU BY THE HAND
he was well educated by tutors and well paid private schools, it was obvious that giles was gifted in the department of intellect. after all, once cannot be a watcher and be stupid. private schools annoyed giles, he found that a lot of the other students were simply there because of their families money. granted he couldn't study about the supernatural on the side, not at the school his parents sent him too. he tried though, to learn despite hating that he was fated for a calling he didn't want. you see giles wanted to be a grocer or something, anything but a watcher.
by the time he was teenager he was heavy into the dark magics and very unstable. giles was a virtual time bomb of hate , angst and turmoil. his parents thought he was simply acting out like all teenagers do. little did they know just how wrong they were. things kept spiraling downhill. in 1975 he showed just how dark he was by dropping out of oxford and the history degree he was trying to obtain. it was during this time that the ripper persona came through, that and his friendship with a few people and the summoning of a specific demon. eyghon wasn't exactly the right choice for them, but ti was who they ended up summoning, at least that's what the tattoo on his arm shows.
in 1980 due to some rather unforeseeable consequences that rupert dislikes to talk about, he decided to accept his destiny as a watcher and rejoined with the council. during this time he also had a secondary job as the curator to the british museum. it gave him access to information and history that not everyone got to see. it took him a bit to train, to regain the knowledge he tried to forget during his rebellious times. he was an active member of the council working in england until 1996.
that was the year that everything would change in his life. at the behest of the council, rupert traveled to sunnydale california where he was to meet buffy summers , his slayer. as a way to cover the need to be close to the blonde he took a job as the high school librarian. it gave him ample cover, allowed him to be surrounded by the books necessary for his job and a place to train the slayer away from prying eyes.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT I don't really know what I plan to do with him. Aside from trying to guide the slayer(s) Giles is really just trying to keep from falling back into the persona of Ripper. Maybe love down the road if he find someone but I was sort of going to post and see where it went.

Danger was an ever constant companion to the watcher and his weary slayer and her friends. It was always something that they would deal with, until the day that they had died. What made today different, was that Giles has decided to visit the Hyperion Hotel for a reason other than to report on some new portent. This was a social visit, one that had surprised his adopted daughter and her friends. There were things at time that Rupert Giles liked to do to keep people on their toes, and popping by for social reasons seamed to be the biggest thing.
Since his induction into the world of the Watcher's Council, there have been signs and apocalypses and things that would make a lesser man crawl into a cave and die. Giles was too strong for that, and with everything that he had survived would never question the skill and gifts that fapossessed. His attachment to her had been part of his undoing during the old council regime. She was the daughter he never had, the only person he can truly trust to be there for him even in his darkest hour. The conversations today had been light, airy really which was something he was unused to. Checking up on her was a secret motive of course, and keeping track of how things were going with the new slayers seemed to take a lot of effort.
Since he had rebuilt the new watcher's council, Giles had approached those that they could find as current slayers and tried to urge them to at least get some sort of formal training. In a way he could understand the hesitation and resentment of some. Here he was some old stodgy British guy telling them that they weren't good enough on their own, that they needed someone, particularly THE slayer to train them. It could easily be taken as an insult, but it was the truth. No one single slayer, not even Faith , had the experience that Buffy had. She'd been dealing with this situation longer than any of them, and any slayer in the past. To him it had been simple math. At least that was how he had justified it at first but he would never pressure someone to join the group in Los Angeles.
Giles had been in the middle of a conversation with Buffy when the sound of a rather loud motorbike engine cut through his thoughts. For one brief moment he wondered if it was Spike but he doubted it. He hadn't seen the blonde vampire in a while so when a woman pushed through the Hyperion's doors he was a bit surprised. Hesitation was clear in her voice, as if she was unsure of what to do in this exact moment. It took only a moment for the watcher to recognize the woman as one Allegra Vale who had been vehement that she would not come to see Buffy. Keeping his face neutral, Giles spoke before his slayer had the chance.
"Miss Vale. Good to see you again." It was hard to keep himself calm, to not push himself towards the woman to see if she needed assistance. It took too much effort to care, to allow anyone else to get close to him. He had lost everyone he had ever cared about, even Buffy; and though she was standing around him she had died twice. To him the new slayers were just tools in the never ending fight with darkness. Perhaps, after a bit of time Allegra would adjust to life at the Hyperion, with Buffy and her friends or she would end up dead like the other slayers that hadn't chosen to listen to his advice.
