JESSE MCNALLY
jesse | seventeen | straight | good | student | eric balfour
there's something going on
ROUND HERE IN THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD
- Kickboxing; He's not an expert or anything. But since he was a kid, Jesse was encouraged to pick up a hobby. He's been going to lessons for years.
- Goal-Orientated; Sure, it might seem like Jesse is no more than a wimpy geek, but if he focusses on something enough he won't stop until it's acheived.
- Easy-Going; He's been laughed at for so long that he can now just laugh at himself easily. It makes school life a hell of a lot easier.
- Able to Blend In; Jesse is one of those guys who, unless they draw attention to themselves by doing something stupid, can easily be forgotten about. Which does come in handy, quite a bit.
- Entertaining; Jesse can quite often make other's laugh. He has a rather funny side to him - both in his actions and words. But not in the goofy manner that Xander has, but in a more serious - like a stand up comedien.
WEAKNESSES
- Only Human; Jesse isn't supernatural. He's human, and in a demon town, there are quite a few unpleasent things that can happen to a human. He doesn't have any super powers or any ability for magic. He's just...ordinary.
- Severely Dyslexic; Jesse has the reading and writing capability of a six year old. It's not his fault - he was diagnosed with the disorder when he was very young. His parents just haven't had the money to get him extra help, so now Willow's the one who helps him.
- Shy; He is quite a quiet guy. It takes him quite a while to pluck up enough courage to even talk to someone, let alone stand up to them. So he usually keeps his head down and keeps out of the way.
- Pushover; Unless his friends are involved, Jesse will let other's walk all over him. He's a nerd, a geek, and has found that the best way to avoid getting a beating from a jock is to just not rise to it.
- Awkward; Especially around girls, or more to the point, especially around Cordelia Chase. He stutters and mumbles, even after building up enough courage.
- Willow and Xander; Jesse is very protective over his best friends, and hates to think of anything happening to them. They're all he has.

i can't put my finger on
WHAT MAKES ME BITE MY NAILS
Maybe, if he tried, Jesse could be quite an attractive guy. But he usually just...doesn't. He's tall, with dark tan skin and large brown eyes, matching the brown of his hair. Underneath the baggy, geeky clothes he does have quite a nice body, toned from years of kickboxing practise and also from running away from the bullies, but he walks hunched over most of the time, making himself seem smaller. His hair isn't styled, not yet, because he doesn't really care about things like that. He does look quite geeky, and uncool, which is quite possibly the reason why he is so.
Clothing wise, he doesn't seem to have any sense of style. He shoves clothes on in the mornings before he's had coffee, and so sometimes doesn't even realise until he's at school and someone points it out, if a shirt is on back the front or if his shoes are odd. He just doesn't care...though, he does always try to make an effort when he's managed to pluck up the courage to attempt to talk to Cordelia...again.
PERSONALITY
Jesse is a shy guy, unless he's around Willow and Xander. Around them, the boy is talkative and chatty, and even though Xander's the one in the group who tries to keep everyone entertained, Jesse does get quite a few laughs himself. Around anyone else though, he's quiet and almost withdrawn, learning after years of being the target for bullies not to draw unwanted attention to himself. When he does have to talk in public, it's usually in a stuttered tone, especially if he's anywhere around girls at the time.
With girls, Jesse has no experience whatsoever, despite knowing that he likes Cordelia, and has liked her for years, despite her rather bitchy nature. He never knows what to say, however, or how to act - and always seems to just make a fool out of himself when he tries. The only girl he can talk to is Willow, and that's because she's his friend. He is a loser in the dating area, to be blunt.
However, underneath the shy nerdy boy exteriour, he does have a rather strong soul. He does let people walk all over him, because it's easier, but if someone get's upset with either of his friends, Jesse will more often than not be the one to stand up for them. Out of the three, he would be the most protective. And he always is more calm and controlled than Xander, quietly evaluating things when he can, something honed by his years of secret (except to his friends and family) martial arts training. And he is determined. If something bad happens, that nature will be the one brought to the fore.
LIKES
- Comic Books; You know where you are with storybooks. Things in fantasy which just shouldn't be real. You can deal with them, when they're in there.
- Cordelia Chase; Jesse has had a crush on her for years, but can never get the courage together to talk to her. Well, talk to her without blushing and making a fool of himself.
- Xander and Willow; They're his best friends, his family. Jesse will stand up for them and protect them, because each of them don't really have anyone else.
- Drawing; Mainly cartoons and comic style drawings, but Jesse is an artist. He enjoys sitting down and drawing more than hanging around or flirting with girls, like the jocks in his year, for example.
- Kickboxing; Over the years, he's grown used to it. And it's nice, having something he's good at.
DISLIKES
- Jocks; Or bullies of any sort. He doesn't like being picked on, but he doesn't like it when Willow and Xander are being picked on even more.
- Reading In Class; He can't do it, so won't, and refuses to read out loud in class. He's mocked enough already, and called dumb, he doesn't want to enforce that belief.
- Bitchy Girls; Like Harmony and Buffy Summers. He can't not like Cordelia, because he fancies himself to be in love with her, but he does hate the way they whisper and giggle behind his back. Especially if he has a notice taped there and doesn't realise it.
- Balloons; Jesse has a phobia of them, originating from back in first grade, when for a joke, another boy tried to put his head in one. He can't even be in the same room as one now.
- Vampires; Not yet, maybe, but when he's introduced to the world of the supernatural, Jesse will develop a deep hatred for them...and in fact, for all demons.

but i know i'll never leave
'CAUSE THERE'S NO WAY OUT FOR ME
Born in New York, Jesse moved to Sunnydale with his parents when he was five years old, and entering school for the first time. He can't remember life in New York, having been too young to do so, but does occasionally still have some of the accent when he gets agitated. Moving to Sunnydale, however, is something he can remember - especially the fear of being somewhere new. Even as a young child, he didn't make many friends, until the Balloon Incident, when he first met Xander and Willow (after running to the loos and crying his eyes out).
He quickly became firm friends, understand even in his young age the problems in Xander's home life, like Willow did, and as they grew up, he was the one who made the most invitations for them all to spend the days together. He gew closer to both of them, but usually closer to Xander than to Willow (because Willow was a girl, and no matter how good friends they were, Jesse was always awkward around them). Especially around Cordelia Chase, who he started admiring from afar quite early on, even without understanding what it was. However, he started being more comfortable around Willow when he bashfully learnt of his learning disorder. Something that has never gotten better even as he's grown up.
Moving up to Sunnydale High was an eye opener. Before, yes, he had been a target for bullies, but it was easily manageable because they were kids and he had friends, and nothing was really bad (after the Balloon Incident). However, it soon became clear that living as the three of them did wasn't the best way to avoid being taunted. As such, Jesse became slightly more withdrawn from everyone except Xander and Willow...yet even though Cordelia quickly turned into the Queen Bitch, he couldn't stop liking her. At High School, his disorder was also revealed by accident, which made him more of a target, being called dumb, and stupid. He has, however, managed to joke his way around it, and life is quite a bit easier now he's seventeen. Especially because Xander and Willow are there. If anything happened to one of them, however...something would change.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
To begin with, Jesse will be the geek, the nerd, the awkward boy who keeps to his friends and who just can't get a date. Bullied and mocked, and the like. After his introduction to the supernatural, however, which won't be pleasent (involving the death of one of his friends, maybe?) Jesse will change. He'll become more withdrawn, perhaps, but also delve into the supernatural, learning of the Slayer(s) and following them maybe, determined to learn how to became a fighter against the darkness himself. I can see him fighting on his own for a while, fueled by the anger he gained at the first meeting, and losing his entertaining/amusing nature, becoming serious. Perhaps even dropping out of high school. But he'll get even more protective as well. And more mysterious and attractive to those around.
