Naomi Rachel Blackwell | 28 | Heterosexual | Good | Detective | Rose Byrne
do you dream that the world will know your name
SO TELL ME YOUR NAME
[/li][li]INTELLIGENCE - Naomi is an extremely bright individual, and it is because of this that she advanced so quickly through her career. She is very clever, observant, and good at putting pieces together - it's difficult to get anything past her.
[/li][li]MANIPULATIVE - Well, she can be. She's good at playing innocent in order to gain the trust of others, most of the time to get the information she's after. She's also studied a bit of criminal psych, so she's fairly skilled at pulling strings and interrogating people.
[/li][li]HEADSTRONG - There isn't much that frightens Naomi; as a detective in Sunnydale she's seen her share of strange things. She isn't easily intimidated, and is often the first to volunteer to crawl into one of those dark, creepy places...
[/li][li]TRAINED IN COMBAT - Both hand-to-hand and weapon; needless to say it was a necessary training session to undergo given her line of work. Naomi does carry a licensed gun on her at all times...not that it would do much good against about half of Sunnydale's population, but there you have it..
WEAKNESSES
[/li][li]HUMANITY - That's right. No special powers, no magical abilities. Naomi is quite simply, only human.
[/li][li]CURIOSITY - Actually, morbid fascination would be the better term - with anything having to do with the supernaturalor even death. Naomi's kind of obsessed with the supernatural presence in Sunnydale, and as a result she's often sticking her nose where it doesn't belong and getting herself into trouble.
[/li][li]MASOCHISTIC - This is a well-guarded secret, but Naomi...sometimes craves feeling pain. Mostly because she just wants to feel something. But if there's a chance she'll get hurt on the job, she'll go even further out of her way to find it. Needless to say, this tendency can be quite harmful to her.
[/li][li]ARACHNOPHOBIA - The one area where Naomi isn't recklessly fearless - she's terrified of spiders. Terrified. To the point of near-immobility.
[/li][li]APATHETIC - Naomi has a difficult time expressing most of her emotions; really connecting to people...in some situations where most people would experience compassion, she's just...blank. And it sort of frightens her.
[/li][li]INSTABILITY - It has to be said, Naomi's not the most...level person you could ever meet. Not that she's been diagnosed or anything, but she's prone to depression, mood swings, and even the occasional breakdown if things at work go badly.

don't tell me if i'm dying
'CAUSE I DON'T WANNA KNOW
Naomi has a slender, semi-tall build, standing at about 5'6 sans-heels. She has a very different kind of beauty about her; it's neither the sultry appeal of the average Sunnydale girl you'd find at the Bronze, nor the dolled-up beauty of a Hollywood star -- it's more of a natural kind of beauty she possesses. She has long chestnut brown hair, sleek and dark and wavy...though, more often than not it's pulled back out of her face. It's more convenient that way, where her job is concerned. Naomi has a smooth, lightly tanned complexion with a light rose-tinted flush about her cheeks, full lips, and a firm jaw. Her eyes are probably her most striking feature. Deep brown in color, they are almond-shaped and extremely expressive...when she actually has something to express, that is.
She keeps an unusually straight, disciplined posture and moves with a certain sense of grace, more because of ten years of piano lessons and rehearsals than an attempt at detective-esque savvy. Naomi has a somewhat elegant sense of style; while she doesn't wear a ton of make-up, she isn't quite a jeans-and-t-shirt kind of gal either. She prefers something a bit more professional...or at least that's what she tells people; actually its more about the fact that she's a bit of a shopping nut if we're being honest.
PERSONALITY
Naomi has a somewhat obsessive personality. When she decides she wants to discover or accomplish something, she simply cannot allow herself to let it go. It's partly why she's so good at her job - but also partly why her job tends to affect her so negatively. Her subject of fascination for the past five years? Sunnydale's supernatural elements. It goes without saying that this is a dangerous topic for a human with no notable powers to delve into, but it hasn't stopped her yet. What began as a morbid curiosity regarding death and what might come after it has, in the span of her Sunnydale career, led to a sort of obsession with all creatures of the night. Naomi firmly believes that they exist, despite whatever odd looks and mutterings such a proclamation might earn her. You could say that she is devoted to her job, yes, but more out of a longing to solve any mystery that baffles her rather than an actual firm determination to protect the innocent.
Outside of work, Naomi initially comes off as reasonably friendly. She is well-mannered and sociable, though a bit hot-tempered, and isn't a bit shy in engaging others in conversation...especially if she thinks she has something to learn from them. However, Naomi has a tendency to keep everyone at a very firm distance. She doesn't really connect with people well; her interests are flighty. And, while she is generally nice enough if you don't give her a reason not do be, she tends to fail to recognize an attempt to reach out to her - which in turn allows her to sometimes be interpreted as 'cold'. She doesn't make friends too easily.
Not that she feels she has much time for a social life anyway, she's a very busy bee. Naomi's not the type who can sit still for very long, and as such she is nearly always investigating, researching, exploring...you name it. She is a somewhat high-maintenance person who has little patience for those who can't keep up with her...along with cowards, manipulators, and people whom she considers to be 'stupid'. She doesn't talk a whole lot when she doesn't need to, instead she prefers to observe, but when she does speak you can pretty much count on her sticking a sarcastic quip in somewhere between words.
All in all, she pretends not to be very much of a people person. She doesn't really need friends, she claims. But, just like everyone, Naomi occasionally does long for companionship at times. She longs for a lot of things, actually, but considers these to be weaknesses and very rarely makes mention of them. She often worries about that sort of thing: showing weakness, especially on the job. For if Naomi even borders on failure, it can have quite a negative effect on her. She's not the most...stable-minded person, often going from void apathy to uncontrollable waves of emotion, which...could definitely prove to be a problem for her later on.

OF ANGELS ON THE MOON
Naomi was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of a lawyer and a professional chef, and the younger sister of Maura Blackwell - older by three and half years. Naomi lived a fairly normal childhood. She was a city kid, but craved the outdoors and spent a good bit of her time in parks and playgrounds as a young child. She was the bright, adventurous sort of kid who made friends easily, but infamous for having a knack for getting into trouble. She was always coming home with scrapes, bruises...even a broken leg, once. Still, she more or less enjoyed a pleasant life in Los Angeles with her family until she was about thirteen years old and in seventh grade.
It was then that tragedy struck the Blackwell family. Naomi's father, coming home late from work one day, got into a car accident and died in the hospital three days later. The incident had a profound effect on the entire family, both emotionally and financially. Without her father's income, Naomi's family was forced to downsize, moving from their place in L.A. to a smaller home in Sunnydale, where Naomi's mother soon opened up her own little restaurant. Within their first couple years in Sunnydale, Maura went off to college - all the way across the country, in fact, to Boston University. Their father's death had hit Maura the hardest, and she seemed to want to get as far away from her old life as possible. However, this left Naomi alone. Her mother had little time for her as she strove to support the family, and Naomi had become rather withdrawn since her father's death and was finding it difficult to make friends in Sunnydale.
Naomi was slowly slipping into depression, so to distract herself she spent most of her time exploring; looking into Sunnydale's old haunts and reading up on its history. One thing she became particularly interested in was the outrageously high death rate the little town seemed to possess, due mostly to 'unexplained' crimes and incidents. Naomi wanted answers, and no one seemed to have them. It was this, mainly, that first sparked her interest in detective work. Sunnydale's police force was...less than satisfactory, as her mother so often complained, and Naomi soon got the idea in her head that if she could work her way up in Sunnydale's little law enforcement system, she could reform it entirely - and find the answers she was looking for.
After high school, she went on to earn a degree in criminal justice at UC Sunnydale, and then attended a police training academy for four months. It was here in particular that she really began to excel, and was out on the streets as part of Sunnydale's police force in no time. But police work alone wasn't exactly what Naomi was aiming to settle for; she was more interested in having the liberty to investigate crimes freely rather than just scampering around busting criminals. She worked hard and seemed to possess natural talent, and after only about a year and a half of police work, there was already talk of promoting her.
Unfortunately, her promotion would have to wait. Naomi got herself into a bit of a sticky situation, you see: while impulsively following the suspect of a robbery case, she...suddenly lost track of him. The next thing she knew, he was behind her, knocking her to the ground. Naomi managed to get to her gun, and shot him - three times. Bizarrely, her attacker was not deterred. He grabbed her, and with a horrific transfiguration of his face, sank a pair of monstrously sharp fangs into her neck.
He was, as Naomi would later discover, a vampire - a vampire who'd actually had the intention of turning her, judging from her rescuer's account of finding him trying to force his own blood down her throat. Her rescuer...Naomi's still not completely sure what the deal with that guy was, and she never saw him again afterwards...judging from the fact that he'd been capable of fending off a full-fledged vampire, though, she's willing to bet he had some sort of magical capabilities.
Naomi was rushed to the hospital after this occurred, was given a blood transfusion, and ultimately survived. After a bit of recovery time, she determinedly returned to work to a very pleasant surprise: she was promoted. Finally, she was going to be able to work as a detective.
And she has been ever since. However, her work has kind of...gone off on a tangent a bit. The incident with the vampire was the very thing to spur her obsession with the supernatural...not that anyone had really believed her account of what had happened to her, figuring that the blood loss must have made her delusional, but Naomi is certain of what she experienced. She quickly branched off into some private research of the paranormal and Sunnydale's history concerning it...and was stunned to see how much evidence of it had been sitting under her nose for so long.
She's become a bit of a fanatic these days - learning more about the supernatural is really her main priority while on the job. Crazy, right?
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Well, Naomi's certainly gonna be poking around a bit...and probably getting herself into quite a bit of trouble as a result. I'm not quite sure where I'd like to take her character yet, but as she learns more about the wacky stuff going on in Sunnydale, and...maybe even meets the vamp who tried to turn her somewhere down the road, I can see one of two things happening a.) she actually wises up enough to become a valuable asset in fighting all creatures of the night, or b.) she gets in a bit too far over her head and ends up being manipulated as a pawn of said creatures of the night...maybe even being turned into a vampire or were somewhere down the road ..
